Although I've had a buddy list for over a decade, I had never "block"ed anyone until about six months ago.
I hate the "block" function. It is such a "relationship-on-my-terms" button.
(Not with the people I don't know, block me and whatever, I don't care. It's when my actual friends block me.) Why? What does it hurt for me to know you are online? I'm not going to bother you if you don't want to be bothered.
Too many times I've had conversations like:
Sarah: What do you think? Beth says I should go for it.
Susannah: Beth's on?
Sarah: Yeah
Susannah: Nice, she's blocked me again.
Am I actually that annoying?
It's especially frustrating because the majority of my connection with my friends back home is via IM and email.
I got so annoyed with it one day, when I knew I was blocked by about five people, that I blocked every single person on my lists. Then I laughed for a while and unblocked about six people. (Now I only have my weird middle-aged divorcee stalkers blocked...which I should have done years ago.)

I usually block the perverts. And I once blocked my auntie, she was getting on my nerves. I don't think I've ever blocked you. Actually, I'm usually online to talk to ya, but we're never on at the same time.
well, at least your stalkers are divorced. It would be weird if they were married . . .
