The other day I was talking to this chick named Nadia. We were discussing what bands we like. She, in her thick accent, named some Mexican band. I said, "I have no idea who that is." Shocked, she proclaimed, "You have never heard [name of band]?!" I asked what they play and she said, "Mexican hip hop." Now let's ask ourselves this one question: WHY THE HECK WOULD I LISTEN TO MEXICAN HIP HOP?!
I told this to Irma and she compared it to my surprise when I found out Irma didn't know anything about Monty Python. I disagreed, because that is totally different. I said, "Heavens, you speak English; that enough makes it completely different than my not knowing her Mexican hip hop."
Irma argues that you don't need to speak the language to know about something. Ok, that may be true, I know a few French things. But you still can't compare it to my not knowing the songs from a Mexican hip hop group. Irma speaks English--there is a rational chance she would watch a Monty Python sketch. I do not speak Spanish, in fact I don't like Spanish, there is no rational chance that I would sit down and listen to freaking Mexican hip hop!
Irma says that if I lived in L.A. I would come across it, even if unwillingly, because of the amount of Mexicans. What the? Hey Irma, if you lived in the U.S. you would come across Monty Python, even if unwillingly, because of the amount of fans of British comedy.
