v. intr.
To have the mind excessively preoccupied with a single emotion or topic:
I get obsessed easily. It's definitely not a good thing because it can quickly begin to control me. I need to learn to master my obsession or my obsession will become my master (haha!)
The Sphinx: Your temper is very quick, my friend. But until you learn to master your rage...
Mr. Furious: ...your rage will become your master? That's what you were going to say. Right? Right?
The Sphinx: Not necessarily.
To obsess over something is to set it up for failure. Nothing can live up to the expectations that obsessing brings. I obsess over everything. From an idea to an issue to a person. Getting obsessed with people is very easy for me, I have to watch out. The obsessions can last for years, as well. After sneakily finding out the email address of a prior obsession I had to actually remind myself that that kind of behavior has to stop; I mean heck, the guy is married now.
I think a lot of my stalkish behavior stems from my obsessing. Not even over a particular person, just the desire to have that feeling of the accomplishment of learning things in a stealthy way. Or even remembering things. (My crush in 4th grade was 8 pounds 10 ounces at birth and his middle name is Paul--though Sarah and I have always called him Bucky.)
I have a few obsessions right now that I want to stop. I think being too eager for something can push it further and further away at times. Especially with people. It definitely sets everything up for failure.
Susannah: "Ryan, I want to stop obsessing about [What'sHisFace], what should I do?"
Honeyman: "How often do you [communicate with him]?"
Susannah: "Whenever I get bored. So five times already today."
Honeyman: "Well stop that."
Susannah: "I can't just stop cold turkey! That'll just make me want to do it more!"
Honeyman: "Ok, fine. You can only [communicate with him] once a day."
Susannah: "Once? Wow, that's harsh. ...I should probably take his picture off as my desktop wallpaper then, huh?"
Honeyman: "Hahaha, yeah."
