Miss independent / Miss self-sufficient / Miss keep your distance

I have trouble with one thing: A balance between damsel-in-distressy and independent-womany.

I don't know if it is because my best friend while growing up was a boy (Sar, you got mad at me too many times and you were younger...otherwise I'd consider you over Jared ;) ), or because of my being treated like crap by guys and having to fend for myself.
Until very recently, guys were never chivalrous around me and I grew to like it that way. (I can open my own dang door, thanks.)

I can do things most of my lil girlfriends can't. Heck, I can set the time on the VCR. ;) I can fix the chain on my bike, I can take apart a VCR and put it back together correctly, I built a dollhouse (well, I only finished one room) for my little sister, and I have taken apart VHS tapes more than a few times to fix them.

(This is probably why my dad would buy me pink nail polish and ask me to wear skirts when I was younger. HA! See where that got you, Dad? You got a cosmetology & fashion obsessed daughter!!! Ha ha!)

Recently I had to carry two large & heavy bags from my classroom to my car. I could handle the first one fine. The second one was awkward and difficult.

Dude-who-took-over-my-job: "Can I help you take this to your car?"
Me: "It's Ok, I've got it."
Dude: "Are you sure? It's no big deal, it's on my way."
What-I-was-thinking: "Heck no! I can do it myself, stop asking!!!"
Me: "That's Ok."
Kummer: "Take it! She wants you to. She won't admit it. She thinks she is Little Miss Independent Lady. So, yes, she'd love it if you would help her."
Me: "No, really, that's OK."
...I carried them both myself.
-------
I get chastised for it from all directions.
I know I shouldn't act like that. I should graciously say yes. I should take a seat when offered me. I should accept any dates. I should blah blah blah.
But I don't want to all the time. I can do it my dang self. I can carry big things; if I'm gonna have linebacker shoulders I might as well put them to use!!!

Ryan & I were getting heavy bags of bark for his lil landscaping project a few months ago. I grabbed a bag (from a high shelf) and put it on the cart thingy. He thought that was cool of me. But when I went to get another one he WOULDN'T LET ME. You can still be a man and let me carry heavy things!!! The world will survive!!! I can do things and not stand by pretending to be helpless. Pretending that I am not bigger than you and can probably carry more of them. Pretending that I can't have a new manicure, walk in high heels, and carry a large bag of bark all at the same time.
BUT I CAN! I CAN DO IT ALL! I CAN DO MORE THAN YOU CAN! How little do you feel now?

But I do let Honeyman pump my gas. I hate doing it and he wants to do it for me, so whatever. Oh! I also let him open doors to buildings ...but he'd better not touch the car door.
