Monday was Deborah's birthday. She came over to the office and was talking to me when I remembered that Jonny Lang was playing a concert in SLC on her birthday (that and because she doesn't like concerts is the reason Deb turned me down in the first place. We went together the first time he came.). I asked her again to go with me. She said no. We looked up the phone numbers of Kingsbury Hall and looked up ticket information. Tickets were $35 a person. Ick. I repeatedly asked Honeyman if he would be willing to go with me. He said no, repeatedly; DorkHead.
I was perusing my options when Clarke came upstairs. He said, "Hey Susannah, guess what I have." I was choosing between Jonny and Brad Pitt's home phone number in my head and went with "You have tickets for Jonny Lang tonight?!??" He went, "Uhh, yeah. And I can get backstage passes. Doug and Craig are opening for him." I believe I said "You are freakin kidding me." about four times.
After waiting for Craig to find out for sure if we could go then being put on the guestlist- we left at 6:30. We stopped off at M&D's house so I could change out of my sweatshirt.
We got to the concert as Clay was performing. They were good. Clay himself sounds like a mix between Sting and Bono...interesting voice.
It was an interesting crowd of people. I felt like a lil preppy in my white linen skirt, pink top, and ribbon in my hair. We were sitting directly behind the She-male in tiny white denim shorts and a SEQUINED black top, her date: the short-man-tanned-beyond-recognition, 4'11" Mullet Grandma who was shaking her behind to every song, her date: man-with-big-hair-directly-in-front-of-me-messing-up-my-view-of-Jonny, Drunk chick, and her date: man-with-same-hairstyle-as-my-mother-and-grandma. Not to mention the drunk guys behind us who would yell incoherent things at Jonny. Everyone around us reeked of alcohol (which I decided smells like a mixture of canned green beans and sweaty socks).
Jonny Lang (whose real name is Jon Langseth, btw) went on at 9:00. He was awesome!!! He had cool guitar solos in each song (of course). The most interesting ones were when he sang the guitar solo along with his guitar.
(I haven't seen my Lie To Me CD (Jonny's first one) in about two years. Clarke says he doesn't have it, yet he knew all the Lie To Me songs and none of the other CDs? Hmmmmm. ;-) )
Jonny did two encores ending with Lie To Me, which was his very first single. It rocked.
After the show I stood outside the back door, near the tour bus, with a small group of fans. I got the bass player and the other guitar player 's autograph. The girls next to me asked Doug for his autograph. They took a picture with him, which Clarke took. Clarke made Doug kiss the girls cheeks for the picture. Hahaha. (then Doug walked away to his car) Clarke then taught the girls to call Doug Bronco and THEN gave them Doug's cell phone number. (The girls were freaking out. One of them later taunted to the other, "I have Bronco's num-ber! 'don't call me, I'll call you'!")
I waited a bit longer there because Clarke was jumping Doug's car. I kept watching the tour bus rather than the back door because it made more sense to me for Jonny to be in there. His wife, Haylie, came out of it a few times to take the dog out, and his bodyguards were standing in front of the door. One of them saw me watching the bus rather than the door and he smiled.
I was just standing there, waiting, when suddenly this skinny lil white guy came out of the bus. He was walking right towards me when it hit: That is Jonny. The girls next to me threw their tickets and Sharpies out so he signed for them first. He then turned to me and I couldn't say anything- I just handed him my paper and he signed it. The girls next to me asked for a picture with him. When they were done I think I said "can I as well?" though that may have been just in my head, I'm not quite sure. We posed for the picture and I forced my arm around his waist!!! (Hello, I'm a nerd.) Clarke took the picture for me. (It'd better turn out good, Clarkeeee!) Then I played paparazzi and took a bunch of pics while he was standing there signing autographs. Then I begrudgingly walked to the car.
I HAD JUST MET JONNY LANG, who has been my favorite musician for almost SEVEN years.
